DISASTER RELIEF UPDATE – October 3, 2017

Rotary Club of Hanover,

A few weeks ago Hanover Rotary collected $800.00 to purchase deodorant and to assist in transportation costs in support of Rotarian John Bailey’s collection of supplies for distribution in Texas and Florida. It is now time to move our attention to long-term recovery.

Your District Disaster Relief Committee met this week to establish goals for where to donate funds raised by the clubs in our district.

To assist in meeting the District goal of $50,000.00, Rotary Club of Hanover has established a goal to raise $5,000.00. The first $1,500.00 raised in our Club will be matched by an anonymous $1,500.00 donation. Please be generous and make your checks payable to Rotary Club of Hanover Charitable Fund, with the notation: Hurricane Disaster Relief. You will receive a tax deductible letter of acknowledgement. Checks can be brought to a club meeting or mailed to Peg Sennett, 167 Primrose Lane, Hanover.

  • We have an additional anonymous donor who, if we raise $5,000.00 total, will contribute an additional $1,000.00, bringing our total to $6,000.00.

How will funds be distributed? Funds collected by our Club will be sent to areas in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico that can be identified as low income with limited financial resources. Our goal is to be a good shepherd of donor funds, supporting specific identified needs/projects and not simply sending monies for unspecified use.

Your district committee will vigilantly research progress, select projects that meet our goals, and keep our Rotarians informed on how monies are distributed.

Goals set for Texas and Hurricane Harvey

Following research, D5910 has been selected as the hurricane area in Texas to receive our District funds. Located in south- east Texas, the district covers Beaumont, Friendswood, League City, Texas City, etc.

The first donation will be sent to Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders; they have set up a recovery site in the D5910 area, establishing case management, volunteer housing and volunteer work crews. They have made a three-year commitment to restore homes in the area covered by D5910. Since Katrina, FCDR has worked with our District through our Joining Hands rebuilding efforts. FCDR has been the recipient of several D7390 Club Grants to restore/rebuild homes along the Gulf and East Coasts.

Goals set for Florida and Puerto Rico

While your District Disaster Relief Committee has not, as of this date, identified a recipient for district funds in Florida or Puerto Rico, the following Rotary district in Florida is collecting donations:

District 6960 encompasses over 51 clubs from Palmetto and Bradenton in the north, to Naples and Marco Island in the south; east to Labelle, Clewiston and Arcadia then to Sanibel-Captiva and Anna Marie Islands. Their website has not identified a use for the funding. Donations can be made to The Rotary Foundation DAF. A donation form is located on the RotaryD6960.org website.
